At A Glance

The McGill Innovation Collective is building the university's innovation ecosystem through experiments, initiatives, and strategic partnerships.

The Problem

Here’s the thing - there’s a lot of innovative stuff happening at McGill.  But no one knows about it, because the university is divided into so many individual silos.  This is where the Office of Innovation jumps in: to form a collective that will break down the silos, and foster meaningful collaboration between them.

Alright, so collaboration means that there are tons of cool projects to show to the world.  The problem is, McGill’s website is incredibly restrictive and makes it hard to convey the idea of innovation.  So I reached out to members of the McGill community and beyond to ask what they would like to see if the McGill website could be restructured. After in-depth online and in-person interviews, here are the top 3 highlights:

    Brighter, cleaner design
    Less text-heavy pages
    Better organization of information

The Solution

We decided that creating an external website would be the best way get around the limitations of the McGill website.  This new site would be interactive, coherent, and effortless to use. Besides usability, the goal was to have the user see the website and think “Mhm, this is what innovation looks and feels like”, rounding out a both visually and functionally delightful experience.

The Challenge

The main challenge now is to figure out how to implement this revamped, wow-factor look, while maintaining true to McGill’s professional brand identity.

The Process

Using what I learned from user research, I created user personas, user flows, and wireframes before working on the final product.

Bold, yet balanced aesthetic

With a de-cluttered layout

And intuitive user flow

Outdated design

Abundance of text, with little to no visuals

Hard to find information
